Rocky Ridge Farm was originally established in 1862. The over 500 acre farm went up the Canton Mountain and down to the Androscoggin River. Much of it was woods, but also a large amount of cleared pastures that were used for grazing and making hay.

The southern facing farm has three main ridges with seasonal brooks that flow down the valleys of them, and a tremendous amount of large rocks always popping up through in various places. This has always made grazing cattle the best use of the land and is also where the original Rocky Ridge name came from. There are many stone wall boundaries and rock piles on the farm, created by many hours of rock picking over the years.

A sugar bush was also part of the farm, along with a small apple orchard, and at one time strawberries and green beans were grown on the middle ridge that were harvested and taken to town to be sold. There is a rich history on the farm over the years, with different food production always being at the center stage.

Dairy cattle were the primary animals cared for over the years. At first it was registered Shorthorns and then transitioned to registered Holsteins. Along the way the registered herd became commercial and then a transition to Organic farming practices was made in the early 2000’s.

Although the production practices have evolved over the years, the goal of sustaining and caring for the land and animals has always been passed down and remains the primary objective today.
